Page 2 of 2 Other reasons for TMJ are not clearly defined. Some studies blame it on braces, but there have been no conclusive studies to prove that theory. But what they do all agree on is there are three forms of Tempormandibular Jaw Displacement:
Myofascial pain- this is the most common form of TMJ and will cause the sufferer pain in the jaw joints, neck and shoulders. Displaced disc- a degeneration of the jaw joint, caused by injury, displacing the disc from its normal mooring and every time the joint goes to close improperly, the disc becomes eroded. Degenerative joint disease- an arthritic like disease that causes the erosion of the joints and or the disc.
People with TMJ can have one or more of these types of symptoms going on. If you jaw just clicks but you have no pain, chances are you not a TMJ patient. But if you can’t eat an apple, or corn of the cob or chew gum without clicking and pain, and you have not seen a doctor. I urge you to do so.
If you suspect you are a TMJ sufferer let your dentist know. Today they have special equipment they can use while working on your teeth, to minimize your discomfort. My dentist is kind, if I raise my hand during a procedure, he will stop what he is doing and will wait until I am ready to begin again. Even though I have had the surgery, I was involved in an accident several years ago when I collided when my head hit a woodpile so I again have problems with TMJ. The doctors have told me that a second surgery is not advisable at this time.
